The Ultimate Guide to Maintaining Your Vape Cartridge

Proper storage and maintenance can dramatically extend the life and flavour of your cartridge. Follow these tips to get the most from every puff.

A cartridge is only as good as how you treat it. Even the best oil — like the strain-specific distillate in our Dabwoods Carts line — can degrade in flavour and performance if it’s stored or handled poorly. The good news is that proper cartridge care takes almost no effort once it’s part of your routine.

Store Upright, Not on Its Side

Cartridge oil is viscous but it still moves. Storing a cart on its side for extended periods can let oil pool near the mouthpiece or seep into the airflow path, leading to leaks and uneven draws. Keep carts upright — most come in packaging designed exactly for this.

Keep It Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight

Heat is the biggest threat to cartridge quality. High temperatures thin the oil, which can cause leaking, and UV exposure degrades cannabinoids and terpenes over time — meaning weaker effects and flatter flavour. A drawer, box, or cabinet away from windows and heat sources is ideal. Avoid leaving carts in a hot car, even briefly.

Room Temperature Is Usually Best

You don’t need to refrigerate cartridges. In fact, cold storage can thicken oil to the point where it’s harder to draw properly, and condensation from moving between cold and warm environments can affect the hardware. Stable room temperature, out of light, is the sweet spot.

Prime Before First Use

Before your first draw on a new cartridge, take 2-3 gentle draws without pressing the fire button (if applicable) to let oil settle into the wick. This prevents dry hits and helps the coil saturate evenly from the start.

Clean the Connection Point

Residue can build up where the cartridge threads onto your battery, leading to poor contact and weak hits. Wipe the threading gently with a cotton swab every so often — never use liquid cleaners directly on the cartridge itself.

Watch Your Voltage

If you’re using an adjustable 510-thread battery, lower voltage settings (around 3.0-3.3V) preserve flavour better and reduce the risk of burning the oil. Higher voltage produces more vapour but can scorch delicate terpenes, especially on live resin products like our Terpwoods line.

Signs It’s Time to Replace

  • Consistently weak or airy draws even after priming
  • A burnt taste that doesn’t go away
  • Visible discoloration or bubbling in the oil near the coil
  • Leaking around the mouthpiece despite upright storage
