Cannabidiol 101

What Is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis plants. It is the most abundant cannabinoid in hemp and has been the subject of extensive scientific research. CBD is non-intoxicating — it does not produce a “high” regardless of dose.

The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp-derived CBD products containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC. This means CBD vape cartridges, oils, and edibles made from compliant hemp can be legally sold and shipped across most of the United States.

How CBD Works in the Body

CBD interacts primarily with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a regulatory network of receptors (CB1 and CB2), enzymes, and endocannabinoids that help maintain physiological balance. Unlike THC, CBD does not bind strongly to CB1 receptors (which produce intoxication). Instead, it modulates the ECS indirectly and interacts with a wide range of other receptor systems.

Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum vs. Isolate

  • Full-Spectrum: Contains CBD plus all naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids from the hemp plant — including trace amounts (<0.3%) of Delta-9 THC. Produces the “entourage effect.”
  • Broad-Spectrum: Similar to full-spectrum but with Delta-9 THC removed. Retains other cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • Isolate: Pure CBD only — no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or plant compounds. Most predictable for drug testing scenarios.

All Dabwoods CBD cartridges use full-spectrum hemp extract — the most natural expression of the plant’s cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Note: CBD is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Statements about CBD have not been evaluated by the FDA. Always consult a healthcare professional before using hemp products.

Delta-8 THC (Δ8-THC) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp in trace concentrations. For commercial products, it is produced through a well-established chemical process called CBD isomerization — converting hemp-derived CBD into Delta-8 THC using food-grade acidic catalysts.

Structurally, Delta-8 THC differs from Delta-9 THC (the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis) only in the position of a double bond in the carbon chain. This small structural difference results in a noticeably milder psychoactive effect.

How Does Delta-8 Feel?

Most Delta-8 users describe the experience as:

  • Mild, clear-headed euphoria
  • Body relaxation without heavy sedation
  • Less anxiety-inducing than Delta-9 THC
  • Functional — users can typically remain focused and engaged

Is Delta-8 Legal in My State?

Delta-8 THC is federally compliant under the 2018 Farm Bill when derived from hemp. However, a growing number of states have enacted restrictions. Current states with Delta-8 restrictions include: Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, New York, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Washington (this list changes — always verify current law in your state).

⚠ Important: Delta-8 THC is psychoactive. Do not drive or operate machinery while using Delta-8 products. Keep out of reach of minors. Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Safety Guide

Hemp Vaping Safety

Vaping hemp oil is considered lower-risk than combustion (smoking) because no plant material is burned. However, vaping is not risk-free, and consumers should be informed about both the precautions taken by responsible manufacturers and the precautions they should take themselves.

What Makes a Vape Cartridge Safe?

  • No Vitamin E Acetate: The EVALI outbreak in 2019 was primarily linked to vitamin E acetate (tocopheryl acetate) used as a cutting agent in unregulated products. Dabwoods never adds vitamin E acetate or any carrier oils.
  • Ceramic Coils, Not Metal: Low-quality coils can leach heavy metals (lead, nickel, chromium) into vapor. Dabwoods uses ceramic coil technology to eliminate this risk.
  • Glass Tank Construction: Borosilicate glass oil chambers do not interact chemically with hemp oil. Plastic chambers can leach BPA and other compounds, especially at elevated temperatures.
  • No Propylene Glycol (PG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG): These diluents are common in e-cigarettes and can produce harmful byproducts when heated. Dabwoods cartridges contain only hemp oil and botanical terpenes.
  • Independent Residual Solvent Testing: Every batch is tested to confirm no residual solvents remain from the extraction process.

Safe Use Practices

  • Start with 1-2 draws and wait 5-10 minutes before taking more
  • Use at the lowest effective voltage setting
  • Do not use while driving or operating heavy machinery
  • Store cartridges upright at room temperature, away from direct sunlight
  • Not for use by persons under 21 years of age
  • Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
  • Consult a physician if you have any respiratory health conditions

CBD dosage is highly individual — body weight, metabolism, tolerance, and the specific effect you’re seeking all influence the optimal dose. There is no universal “right” amount. The best approach is to start low, observe the effects, and adjust gradually.

CBD Dosage by Experience Level

Experience LevelStarting DoseMax DoseTiming
New to CBD1-2 draws (3-8mg)3-4 drawsOnce daily
Occasional User2-3 draws (6-15mg)5-6 draws1-2x daily
Regular User3-5 draws (10-25mg)As needed2-3x daily

Delta-8 THC Dosage

Delta-8 is psychoactive — dosage is more critical. New users should always start with a single draw and wait at least 15-20 minutes before considering more. Delta-8’s effects can be delayed, especially if you’re new to cannabinoids.

Experience LevelStarting DoseNotes
Delta-8 Beginner1 draw onlyWait 15-20 min before more
Experienced D8 User2-3 drawsAdjust based on tolerance
Tip: Voltage setting affects dosage delivery. Lower voltage (2.4V) produces smaller, cooler draws with more flavor. Higher voltage (3.2V) produces warmer, denser vapor with more cannabinoid delivery per draw. Adjust voltage when calibrating your personal dose.

Important Information

Hemp Products & Drug Testing

Potentially yes. Full-spectrum CBD products contain trace amounts of Delta-9 THC (<0.3%). Regular use can result in the accumulation of THC metabolites (specifically THC-COOH) in body fat tissue. Standard urine immunoassay drug tests screen for these metabolites and cannot distinguish between trace amounts from legal hemp use and higher amounts from marijuana use. If you are subject to workplace drug testing, consult with HR and/or a physician before using any full-spectrum hemp product.

Yes, very likely. Delta-8 THC metabolizes through the same pathway as Delta-9 THC, producing the same primary metabolite (THC-COOH) that is detected by standard drug tests. Tests cannot distinguish between Delta-8 and Delta-9 metabolites. If you are subject to any drug testing, we strongly recommend against using Delta-8 products.

Detection windows vary significantly by test type, usage frequency, and individual metabolism. Urine tests: 3-30 days (occasional vs. daily use). Blood tests: 3-4 hours to 2 weeks. Saliva tests: Up to 72 hours. Hair follicle tests: Up to 90 days. These are approximations — individual variation is significant. Daily heavy users of full-spectrum hemp products may test positive for longer periods than occasional users.

CBD isolate products (containing only pure CBD and no other cannabinoids) carry the lowest risk, but “zero risk” cannot be guaranteed due to potential cross-contamination in the supply chain. A negative result on an isolate-based product is more likely, but cannot be promised. If a drug test is a concern, we do not currently recommend any hemp product with complete confidence.

Yes. All Dabwoods products are hemp-derived with <0.3% Delta-9 THC, compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill. CBD products ship to all states where hemp-derived products are permitted. Delta-8 products are geo-restricted and only available in states with permissive Delta-8 laws. See our compliance page for current state-by-state detail.

21 years of age or older. We employ age verification at site entry (date of birth), ID verification at checkout (AgeID/Veratad), and adult signature confirmation at delivery per PACT Act requirements. We do not sell to minors.

Store cartridges upright at room temperature (65-75°F) in a cool, dark location. Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, and freezing temperatures. Extreme temperature changes can cause the oil to thin or crystallize, temporarily affecting performance. If a cartridge becomes too thick to draw from (often in cold weather), a brief preheat cycle on a variable-voltage battery will restore normal viscosity.

The entourage effect is the theory (increasingly supported by research) that cannabinoids and terpenes work synergistically to produce effects greater than any individual compound in isolation. A full-spectrum hemp extract, containing CBD alongside dozens of minor cannabinoids and the plant’s native terpene profile, may produce a richer, more nuanced experience than isolated CBD alone. This is why Dabwoods uses full-spectrum extraction.

The Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act was expanded in 2021 to include vaping products. It prohibits the use of USPS to ship vape products and requires sellers to use carriers (UPS, FedEx) with adult signature confirmation at delivery. All Dabwoods orders comply with PACT Act requirements. This is why we cannot offer USPS shipping options for any vape products.
